The Outfitters North Fly of the Month is my PM Parr (little fry). April is the time of year that the Salmon fry start to hatch and show themselves in big numbers. This fly is not only deadly on Steelhead but also becomes a nice snack for big Browns that thrive in the waters I guide on.

Little Fry Recipe

Tail: White Grizzly Marabou
Body: Olive Ice Dub with Mallard flank palmered to front of hook
Wing: Grizzly Marabou pulled over top

This weekend join Ed McCoy from Hawkins Outfitters, 11-2 at the shop for a free fly tying demo. Ed will be demonstrating an assortment of fly patterns that work well for Trout on the Upper Manistee and a selection of his favorite patterns for Steelhead on the Big Manistee. He also will be answering any questions you might have about fishing these rivers.
Here is a quick bio about Ed:
Ed McCoy grew up in Northern Michigan fly fishing for trout, salmon, and steelhead. Ed attended Michigan State University and graduated with degrees in Zoology and Fisheries & Wildlife. While attending MSU he worked on several research projects studying streams and fish biology in Northern Michigan. After graduating from MSU he was involved in post graduate research studying salmonid recruitment in the Muskegon River through the University of Michigan. He was very fortunate throughout his college years to be able to study (and play) on some of our more notable rivers such as the Au Sable, Manistee, Muskegon, Pere Marquette, and Pine Rivers. Ed enjoys sharing this knowledge with our clients, and “putting it to work”. As a guide with 7 years of experience Ed enjoys every aspect of fly fishing whether pulling streamers for large aggressive fish, casting dry flies for surface feeding trout, or nymphing.
