Winter Swing – Muskegon River Ed.

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Here’s an updated report from our buddy Jeff @ outfittersnorth.com

Last week found myself taking a little break from guiding and enjoying some skiing with some new snow we received up here. It also let me fish some other rivers and different stretches of the Pere Marquette. I fished the Muskegon river with good friend and guide Kevin Feenstra. Where we spent the day swinging flies with numerous pulls and a couple fish to hand it made for a great day of swinging flies in the winter. For more info on the Muskegon River check out his web site at www.feenstraguideservice.com. The PM and Muskegon are both low and clear with water temps in the 30′s. Plenty of Steelhead around, it’s just a matter of if they want to bite on that given day. For flies try neutral color egg patterns in cheese, apricot and grapefruit. For Nymphs,Caddis,Hex’s and Stones can be good on the days above freezing. For Streamers, Baitfish and Leech patterns with a bit of flash to get there attention and seek out the more aggressive fish. For some great new fly patterns check out my fly page.

Hackle: Yellow and Orange Jailhouse Marabou
Front Body: Olive Ice Dub or Black and Blood Hares Ice Dub
Collar: Olive Marabou
Wing Flash: Copper, Yellow and Green Flashabou

Tying Instructions:

•1. Tie in some Fashabou mirage fringe or large pearl tinsel and wind 2/3 up the body of
the Fly.  If Flashabou is used, pull the remaining flash back as an underwing.
•2. Strip half of the marabou feather and tie it in by the tip.  If yellow and orange is not
available, you can use yellow, orange, black, or olive marabou.  They all work.
•3.  Dub a body of ice dub.
•4.  Wind the marabou in wide wraps through the body.  Add a collar of olive marabou.
•5.  Top the fly with fire tiger holographic flashabou and red flashobou.
•6.  Add a topping of two strands of olive ostrich herl (optional).
Comments:   This fly is a colorful mix of modern materials.  The fire tiger flashabou is
becoming available but you can create similar colors by blending strands of ?ashabou
yourself.  This fly is good for early steelhead but also takes lake run brown trout.

Sometimes you start fishing for trout…
And you end up catching Red Horse Suckers. Terry has over on the Muskegon River and did some trout fishing and ended up hooking into a bunch of Suckers. Here is a good one he got on a black wooly bugger. Nice looking hat as well.
