Join Todd White, from Nomad Anglers, 11-2 at the shop this Saturday for a FREE Fly Tying Demonstration. Todd just finished up his Master at Michigan State University in Entomology and is an avid fly tying and fisherman. Todd grew up in Marquette fishing for Pike and Brook Trout and now enjoys chasing anything that puts a bend in the rod. Todd is one of the most accomplished fly tiers around and enjoys sharing his knowledge and techniques with others. Here is Todd demonstrating one of his favorite nymph patterns the “Polish Wovan Wire Nymph”. Stop by the shop Saturday and learn a few more productive patterns.
He is a nice Boundary Water Pike from earlier this year.
And here is some photoshop magic from a few weeks ago…
after Todd accepted the bet to do the moon walk at Rick’s Bar if we caught a 40″ pike on the Looking Glass.
By the looks of the photo Tommy was successful.
Todd, Tommy and I hit the Looking Glass River last night with some success. The river was running a bit high and stained from the rains we got the night before. Large chatruese streamers were the ticket. I had my best luck on a Feenstra fly called the Bass Detector. Todd got 3-4 pike from 15-23″ , I got 3 nice fat smallmouth and Tommy just had bad luck all together (see next post). Here are some pics.
This morning we set off on our maiden float trip down the Red Cedar. Rumors of monster pike have been flying around the shop for the past week, the aticipation of the trip was high. 7am departure time from the park along Grand River Ave. Todd, Tommy and I filled up the boats and headed to the river. We soon realized the the mosquitos decided they were going to try and carry us away from the stream. I most cases this would be the case but the thoughts of the monster pike we were going to catch helped encourage us to fight the bugs. Along with the BUFF Insect sheild headwear we pushed on. The water was a bit murky but the colorful pike streamers we’d been tying would do the trick. We’ve had some success around some of the local parks and getting to some unfished water was even going to be better. Well about 15 minuted into the float a beaver and some down tress thought otherwise.
I thought we may have to portage a few spots along our float but I didn’t think we were going to need to air lift the boats over and around spots. All I have to say is thank goodness we were not half way through our float or in fast current. Turn around and back to the truck we go to come up with a new plan.
We ended up heading to a favorite road side park and picking up a small pike and then the mosquito’s did carry away. Back to the truck to grab some breakfast. We’ve got some exploring to do on the Cedar, I haven’t given up quite yet I know there are some huge fish in there and I’m going to find some nice water to float.
Went czech nymphing on the White River today…who says you can’t catch fish in the middle of the day?…not me! And the count was…20 browns to the net sized from 9″-14″, 1 steelhead smolt getting ready to head for the big lake, 3 fish I just plain farmed, and about 3 dozen common shiners…not bad for covering a 200 yard stretch of river from 10am-2pm. If you’ve never shortlined nymphed before you need to give it a try…good nymph fishermen are the yodas of the sport…join the club!
Later,
Todd
Here is the Todd’s Polish Woven Nymph that he picked up most of the fish on…
Olive Variety
Todd’s most recent creation didn’t make it out of phase I development here at the Nomad Anglers testing facility.
We both thought tying up a hex out of old yellow fly line would make the perfect bug to float all night long. After dropping it the water we realized it sunk faster than a submarine on a torpedo mission in the Pacific.
Back to the drawing board for our next creation. We did conclude snow shoe rabbit floats like a p.f.d.
Here are 3 fish from last night somewhere up north…
I’d like to say I did a pretty good good of running around taking pictures and netting fish while the bugs where going. Todd also broke off a very large fish on a gurgler well into the night. ~ Enjoy
