Pere Marquette River Report

Here is a report from our good friend Jeff Hubbard: Outfitters North
The Pere Marquette River water level is coming down and clearing. Trout fishing has been decent, some days are better then others. A lot of the fish are pretty fat and full with all that rain we had over a week ago. Started to take some nicer fish towards the end of the week. Streamer fishing was the method of choice last week with the higher dirtier water. Dry Fly fishing should be in full swing though this week as the water is clearing and we are seeing some Gray Drakes and Sulphurs now. Look for these hatches to really take off with the warmer weather forecasted. If interested in some summertime Trout fishing I have these days left in June. June 18,19,26,27. The Pere Marquette River is in great shape with water up and a nice stain to it. Steelhead fishing last week was pretty good with the warmer air temps, rain and melting snow which gave us higher water and some new fish entering the system. Trout fishing has also been really good with the warmer water temps last week the trout started to become much more aggressive eating what ever came there way. Flies last week for Steelhead were a mix bag of Nymphs and Eggs much larger patterns worked such as Hex's and Clown eggs. Streamers it was bigger the better as the water was coming up. My Spring season now has officially started even though it feels like winter again.

Put somes warm layering on and get out and fish!
Hope everyone is enjoying the New Year. I would like to thank all of you who joined me for some great fishing in 2010 and I'm really looking forward to 2011. This spring should be a great Steelhead year. We should see a good number of are late run fall fish and spring fish combined. Lets just pray for some good water levels this spring. (: The Steelhead fishing has been spotty from day to day which is expected in the winter. We saw a good warm up of the New Year, bringing water levels up and giving us a nice stain. The water has now dropped but it's still holding its color. Last week the fishing wasn't consistent everyday but it did seem like when the Steelhead were taking they were taken aggressively not playing with the Streamer so much. This is probably due to them becoming acclimated with the colder water temps again and the color in the water. For Flies, Streamers have been Leech patterns and baitfish patterns. For Nymph's try Hex's,Parr patterns and Caddis. For eggs Clown's and Nukes in a assortment of natural colors.

Pere Marquette Report
Here is a fishing report from the PM and Outfitters North.
Winter Steelheading is upon us. Despite the cold weather and a whole lot of snow, Steelheading this week and last hasn't been to bad. Some day's better then others. Saw another rise in the water last week giving us a nice stain and a few new fish. Still hitting fish on Swung Streamers and Eggs and Nymphs just started to pick up now, with the water temps dropping into the low to mid 30's. Trout fishing has been really good on Swung Streamers and Bead Headed Nymphs. Brown's are really on the bite after there spawn. If your new to sport of Steelheading or a veteran whom has never tried Winter fishing, I would highly recommend it. There is just something about quietly floating down the river in the winter between the wildlife viewing in the snow, lack of anglers and hooking of Steelhead it's a great way to spend a day. LINK
PM Report
Here is an updated PM Report from our friend Jeff Hubbard @ Outfitters North
The Pere Marquette River is still fishing tough for Salmon. I would say this is turning out to be one of the hardest seasons I have ever seen, even as a youngster fishing we always had plenty of Salmon. The fish are really scattered through out the whole river system. We really haven't seen any big pushes of Kings even with the fall like weather we are receiving up here. We have had the rain, the wind and the cooler weather with no signs of huge numbers of fish. The leaves are starting to change and Grouse Season opened last week so Fall is in the air. Other then the fishing being tough, I did have a nice week. I found myself enjoying the woods with a good friend and client John, my girl friend Heather and our Pointing Lab (Guinness). Chasing birds around, enjoying the scenery and shooting some shells there's nothing like wandering the woods on a fall morning in Northern Michigan.

The Pere Marquette is still very spotty for Salmon. Fish are really scattered through out the whole river system. With recent rains on Saturday some new fish moved up but continued to be on the move and scattered quickly. The river is up a little with a slight stain to it. Flies have been big eggs in Chartreuse and Baitfish Patterns. Streamers Chartreuse/White or Red/Orange. Trout fishing was also good last week with small Streamers in White,Olive and Black. Look for trout fishing in the upper river to improve with Salmon starting to spawn.

The Pere Marquette Trout fishing and Trout fishing around the area is still in full swing up here. The Hex fishing on the PM has been sporadic with bugs being inconsistent. Some nights are better then others. Night fishing with Mouse Flies has been picking up with the more humid weather were having. If the night bite isn't your thing the day time fishing has been great. Some good quality fish this year have been taken before the lights go out. Look for Terrestrial fishing to only get better in the months to come. If interested in some Fly-Fishing for Trout on the Pere Marquette I have a couple days left in August.
Pics 6/15,16,18,20: Barry joined me for a couple memorable days on the water with great fishing, wildlife viewing and no Anglers to be seen. Barry holds this trophy Rainbow caught on a Hopper Pattern. Here he is with a trophy Brown taken on a big Stimulator at dark. Barry spotted this little guy tucked up on the bank. (: These two Trout Bums did some hardcore night fishing this weekend. One day fishing till it was time to get Breakfast. Rich holds a really nice Brown taken on the Hex and Matt with one of his biggest PM Browns taken on a mouse pattern.
PM Report
The Pere Marquette is holding its own right now for Steelhead. There are still fish around but we did lose the bulk of them. With the warm weather we saw over the last month fish were coming and going in a hurry. We did get some cooler weather and rain and snow last week which did bring the water up. With the higher water we have seen some fresh fish, but not as much as I thought we would. I'm sure in the next few weeks more fish will trickle in, I however don't think we will witness any big pushes. For flies with the water up Clown eggs worked great last week along with Fry and Parr patterns and Black and Olive Buggers. Look to see Trout fishing improving though especially with streamers and dry's. The Salmon parr are in full swing and I'm seeing a number of dry flies in the air. Including Little Black Stones,Golden's and Hendrickson's. If interested in some Streamer fishing for Trout let me know I have only a few days left this spring.
Hubbard’s Little Fry
The Outfitters North Fly of the Month is my PM Parr (little fry). April is the time of year that the Salmon fry start to hatch and show themselves in big numbers. This fly is not only deadly on Steelhead but also becomes a nice snack for big Browns that thrive in the waters I guide on.
