February 19, 2019 - Kickoff
Well folks, our spring steelhead season is underway. Maybe it's the cabin fever reaching a tipping point, but either way, there are new fish swimming upriver on a regular basis. We are not even close to being done with the cold, but the short term forecast actually looks pretty darn good.
Some of the guys got out over the weekend, and had pretty good success. Lots of hours devoted for a few hookups, but the overall consensus is positive. Fish were taken on hex nymphs, stoneflies, nuke eggs, clown eggs, etc. If you can stay focused all day and keep your flies in the zone, it's likely you will find a few. Easier said than done, but with the weather shifting, it becomes much more tolerable.
Trout bite has been good too ! Euronymphing for trout has become one of our favorite ways to fish this winter. Check out these Euronymphing combos, and if you are interested in trying it out stop by the shop and ask us what its all about.
Still a few spots open for tonight's class with Kyle Hartman in GR. Kyle is a full time guide for the PM Lodge, and spends a considerable amount of time on the water. Super knowledgeable, ultra friendly, and an overall fishy dude. Give us a shout if you plan on attending!
Also some spots open for a Swing Fly Class in East Lansing tonight at 6pm. Check out our full class lineup HERE.
Also keep in mind, we are helping with a fundraiser for a local high school fly fishing club. We are holding an event at Rockford Brewing on February 27th at 7pm. Matt Grajewski (@adaptivefly) will be tying some XL streamers, and discussing design aspects and retrieval methods. A minimum donation of $20 (feel free to donate more!) gets you through the door, and the chance to win some really awesome prizes. Prize items include:
- A full day Smallmouth guide trip with Kevin Feenstra
- A full day guide trip on the PM with Jeff Hubbard
- A full day guide trip with Brad Petkze of Riversnorth Guide Service
- Fly lines from Scientific Anglers
- A couple rods from Echo
- Custom knife from Bob Braendle
- A rather large assortment of top notch streamers generously donated by a local fantasy football league
- Some hand tied flies from Matt Grajewski
- A small selection of Game Changers tied by Erich G
- Other legit prizes !
