April 18th, 2019 | Spring Rains
Lots of rain lately. And snow. And any combination of the two. Typical weather for this time of year, but it seems reluctant to warm up. Thankfully the weather looks really nice next week, with temps in the mid 60's nearly everyday. It should improve everything; fish, bugs, plants, people's moods, etc etc. The snowstorm on Sunday took the entire state by surprise. Most people were expecting a nice little dusting, but we ended up receiving a full on blizzard, with some places getting over 14". Pretty tough to deal with, especially when just last weekend it was 72...
April 9th, 2019 | Redd Hot Action
Lots of steelhead spawning right now, and naturally, lots of people. Seems like every water type has been holding fish; holes, runs, trenches, gravel etc etc. Even though there are lots of visible fish spawning, it's guaranteed there are more around them you cannot see. It's fair to say the run is at peak right now. Not sure if there are more fish on the way, but safe to say the majority of the herd is here, doing their springtime gig. The incoming cold rain could change things drastically. It could possibly draw another wave of fish in, but more...
April 3rd, 2019 | Mud Season
Finally, things have settled down and fishing has been excellent lately. Water is good, still on the cold side, but heating up daily with the sunshine and warm air. This weekend is supposed to be very nice, which will undoubtedly ramp up the steelhead and trout fishing. Steelhead numbers are strong pretty much everywhere. They are spawning in most places, and some have already found drop back fish. They seem to be on average, larger than previous years. Consider running 10lb or even 12lb fluoro rather than the standard 8lb, especially when the water becomes warmer, they can really take...
March 27th 2019 | Fish Everywhere
Lots of action lately. Steelhead and trout fishing has been quite good. Water temps are still low, hovering around the 40 degree mark, but will continue to rise. There are a ton of steelhead at sixth street dam and heading upstream as well. The main run has started, and they are basically all over the place. There are some spawners and fish staging, which opens up lots of different water types. They can be found in holes, runs, tailouts, buckets, etc rather than just the winter holes. Stoneflies and caddis have been good. Nuke eggs are another proven winner. Water...
March 20th, 2019 | Return of the Spring
Today is the Vernal Equinox, indicating the first official day of Spring. On this day, we receive equal amounts of sun exposure and darkness. 12 hours of sunlight, and 12 hours of darkness; hence the name “equinox.” Compare this to the Summer Solstice (June 21), when we receive almost 16 hours of sunlight. Back in December, during the Winter Solstice (Dec 21), we received a scant 9 hours of sunlight. So basically, we are a 1/4 through our yearly trip around the sun. We are getting more sunlight, at a more direct angle, which rapidly heats up the surface....
