I sent out a text to the crew on Thursday: "Anyone want to fish tomorrow?" All I got back was "I wish, man" or "I'll be tied up with work". I'd be flying solo. I don't mind fishing from the boat by myself from time-to-time. It can be very meditative, and I'm able to explore different spots that we'd normally ignore. Usually I end up casting to a void, but sometimes you end up discovering new "ninja" spots that no one fishes. I digress... I launched the boat at first light with nothing but two spey rods in the boat....

We are just coming off of another great king season. The salmon have completed their annual migration up most of the rivers in West Michigan and were in good numbers despite low water. There are still a few straggler fish that are just starting to spawn but will taper off in the next two weeks. A good group of steelhead have also come into most of the rivers following the salmon run. We are catching a lot of our fish by swinging streamers with spey rods or by floating egg flies behind the remaining spawning Kings. Most of our fish...

Lately on most river systems we've been playing the game "how low can we go" most of our river systems haven't seen rain in over 2 weeks. Any that have, never got any real rain water in the headwater sections. This has left the rivers in very rough shape for our migratory fish. Most runs are a week or so behind and have been small steady trickles of fish with no real pushes. Cooler nights have helped bring water temps down and bring in more salmon and a few early steelhead in the lower state rivers. Despite the conditions fishing...

Fall is a time of change and presents many opportunities for fishing. We have been fishing multiple river systems across the state. The Grand, Muskegon, Pere Marquette, and Flat River have all been producing fish for us in the last couple of weeks. The best part about the fall transition time is the abundance of opportunities for the angler. Warm water, cool water, and migratory fish are all in the rivers at the same time. In the last two weeks we've fished for smallmouth, egged for trout behind kings, sight fished carp, and swung flies for salmon and steelhead. Keep in...

It was around 3:00 AM Sunday morning and we were 3/4 of the way through our night float. We had been grinding through an hour long mousing lull, and I was about ready to call it. We had caught a 19.5 incher early on, and had a decent amount of non-committal bumps on the surface throughout the night. I was struggling to keep my eyes open in the rower's seat, when I heard a thrash on Shane's mouse. "Got him, good fish, GOOD fish". I gave one hard back-row and we turned our headlamps on. When we saw the fish,...
