The changing of seasons is upon us. I don’t know about you all, but it felt like a long summer. I’m looking forward to some cooler temps, migratory fish, and all of the other activities that the fall season brings.

We are capping off the summer season mousing… There’s still a week or two left depending on what weather windows get thrown our way. Keep a look out for those few warm nights that are still to come - hopefully they coincide with a couple moon phases. We’ve seen good nights and bad, sometimes the windows are super short - other times, the bite stays steady almost all night. Either way, some very quality fish have found their way to the bag this summer. I’ve played with both mice and frogs, a couple of nights the frog clearly made a difference. If you roll a fish, try dead drifting the fly instead of stripping it back through the same zone. I’ve seen a few fish pick it up quietly after making quite a commotion the first time around.

If you’re into the brookie thing, late summer is always fun. Throwing hoppers, stimulators, ants and the usual terrestrial junk tends to produce! I haven’t made it back to the UP to really chase them down in some time, but September is a great month up there.

Bass are still biting! I haven’t been out much for them but we found some nice fish on small minnow patterns despite some good looks on frogs/top water flies. I’m switching gears and leaving bass alone but there’s no doubt September will offer some nice warm water opportunities if you’re into it.

Salmon are rolling in and the steelhead won’t be far behind. I have yet to make a trip to our migratory fisheries but it won’t be long.

That’s all for now. Fall is coming and so are some great fishing scenarios. See you on the water or in the shop!
