Over the holiday break the water level was still up and the water temperature was down so I took advantage and chased some trout on our local waterways. The trout seemed healthy and happy to play. Smaller streamers, nymphs, and foam bugs all worked well. The first heatwave is behind us but we are entering that part of the summer when more heat is sure to come. With that being said I'm sure the focus of our fly fishing will switch over to warm water species. Personally I have not focused much on chasing smallmouth around but I did hook into...

While steelhead may be past their peak on most rivers, forecasted rains will likely bring in pushes of fresh fish. Egg imitations continue to produce with all the spawning fish on beds, as well as fry and alevin patterns. Water temperatures are on the rise, and the Trout activity seems to be picking up. Fish are chasing streamers on cloudier days, although action has slowed a bit as water levels have dropped. You won't want to miss out on the streamer fishing opportunities with the coming rains. When water temps start to get into the high 40's and the...

Well folks what a strange ride we have been on. Going from low water and no snow, to several feet of snow, to the huge melt and spring like conditions and then just like that thrown back into winter. Mother nature is definitely having a fun time throwing us curve balls. With that being said I do welcome the snow to help us sustain the water levels we have. The Rogue is currently running 240cfs, the Grand downtown is 5370cfs, the Muskegon at Croton is 1970cfs, and the PM at Scottville is 590cfs. Whether or not winter stays around or spring comes...

Well folks, for the first time in a couple years Punxsutawney Phil popped out of his burrow and was unable to see his shadow - it looks like spring will be here before we know it. Now if that isn’t great science, I don’t know what is. All sarcasm aside, this winter has had its ups and downs and for a minute I figured we’d all be glued to our vises for what can feel like eternity in the winter. Now with all these mild days coming, I’m finding it harder and harder to spend hours each day focusing...

Another week of shorter days and dark mornings, and even our first snow of the year, but the clocks roll back on Sunday and we have a "long weekend" to look forward to. Steelhead fishing has been a bit slow to start this year. There are certainly fish around, but it doesn't seem like we have gotten a big wave of fish in any river yet. There are a lot of skips around in the Grand River, and not a lot of big fish yet. River levels are once again falling, but there is rain in the forecast so I am...
