Santa is a steelheading machine! He has a gentle touch, stealthy approach, and is immune to cold weather. An absolute BEAST on the river!   Steelheading has improved over the last week. The mild temps and sunshine have increased fish metabolism, and their willingness to cooperate. Still finding them in the classic winter spots, holding tight to wood and structure. Bright eggs paired with a washed out color (clown egg & pale glo bug) is a good setup. Also having some action on hexes, stones, and wiggler type buggy stuff.  Trout bite has been good, on more "trout" sized patterns. Size 12 and 14...

December 11, 2018 - Mild Thaw

Steelhead and trout fishing have been good locally and up north, but numbers of fish are low and water temps and made things challenging. A warmup over the next few days will greatly improve things, and make fishing more bearable. Egg flies, estaz eggs, and flashy nymphs have all been good lately. December 5, 2018 - Warmth on the Horizon
Recent rains and snow melt have improved fishing conditions, but things are still relatively challenging. The Grand River, Pere Marquette, and Muskegon River have all been producing fish, but the weather has been less than ideal. Egg Flies, Hex nymphs, and small swing flies have been good options. A possible warmup next week will improve the trout and steelhead fishing locally and up north. Check our class schedule for upcoming tying events.

November 27, 2018 - Winter Bliss
Steelhead and trout fishing has been good in the Grand River and West Michigan. Nymphing has been consistent, and swinging spey flies can be good on certain days. Conditions will improve as the weather stabilizes to a more consistent winter pattern. Lots of large steelhead lurking our waters. The quality of fishing changes day to day.

November 20, 2018 - Thanksgiving Steel Report
Steelhead fishing in the Grand River and surrounding tributaries has been good, but the weather continues to dampen the action. There are plenty of fish around, but dropping water temperatures can make it difficult to get fish to cooperate. Nymphing egg patterns and nymphs is consistent, and swinging spey flies is an option, but not necessarily a numbers thing.
