March 6th, 2019 - Getting Warmed Up
Don't want to jinx us, but seems like we might be getting closer to permanent warmth. We all know better than to assume Spring is here, but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel. The past 2 months have been tough on everyone. Hopefully it turns back sooner than later. Here's the 8 day outlook for GR. Not too shabby! Good numbers were caught over the past week. Lots of options in play right now. Pick your favorite method and get it done. Swing, strip, bob, pin, chuck, all are on the table and will work...
February 5, 2019 - Aftermath
What a crazy week that was. The entire state was essentially shut down for several days, with bone chilling temps and insane amounts of snow. The total snowfall for GR last week was somewhere in the 17" range. Much of it melted over the last couple days, causing the rivers to rise a bit. Most rivers are starting to thaw, but shelf ice and slush are still preventing easy access. High, dirty, cold water makes fishing tough, but not impossible. Here's the river yesterday morning. Water is decently high, and very dirty and cold. Haven't heard much on the fishing front, since...
October 31, 2018 - Rogue River and Grand River Update
Last night we got some much needed rain. The Rogue River came up and peaked around 360 cfs. It is flowing with a light coffee stain. The gauge on the Grand River is back online and currently sitting around 4500 cfs and rising. This rain should push some fish up the ladder setting us up for a great week of steelhead fishing. Swinging has been productive the last couple of days, try some flashier flies like Feenstra's Grapefruit Leech or Aquatic Nuisance. Bright egg flies and big stones are great options for indicator fishing.
October 30, 2018 - River Report
Steelhead fishing is improving daily, and the weather looks promising. The Grand River is still fishing well, and will only get better. Looks like there is a good amount of rain headed our way tonight, so fishing will likely be great by the weekend. Egg flies in Apricot, Golden, and Creams are great options, as well as swinging. Dakota found this fish in our secret spot. A few of us spent this weekend up north, and found a few fish. Things were tricky because the water was so low, but we were able to find some spots that were deep...
October 24, 2018 - Fly Fishing Report
Our steelhead season is rolling right along here in West Michigan. Lots of fish around, as well as some lingering salmon. All methods are in play right now, keeping us busy at the shops and on the water. Fishing has become tougher by the day however, due to dropping and clearing water. Steelhead become quite wary in low and clear water, especially on bright days with lots of angling pressure. Some days they can seem untouchable. Swinging can actually be a fairly productive method, simply because you can position yourself way upstream from the hole and lessen your chances of...
