Fall...Finally!
This Fall has certainly been interesting, and at times a bit frustrating. With August-like weather leeching into the king salmon run and scattered, short-lived rainfall across most of the lower peninsula, many of us are hoping for a long cold soak. Many steelhead anglers are happy to see lower, fairly consistent temperatures ahead. The run of king salmon is tapering down and a few coho are being found. Steelhead numbers are increasing. Swinging bright, sparse baitfish patterns is a great option. Brown trout have been caught behind spawning kings using egg flies, and some are eager to eat larger brown...
The Depths of Winter
While the darkest days of winter may be behind us, the coldest days have just arrived. Fishing was decent in the weeks leading up to this cold snap. The bite was getting a little tough from day to day but the persistent angler could still find a few fish a day. Many of us turn to euro nymphing when the fishing gets tough in the winter. The light gear, and heavy flies allow for stealthy presentations to cold stubborn fish. We had several good days of trout fishing before the weather took a turn. Unfortunately it seems that we wont...
Quarantine Life
First off, we hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this chaotic time. It's a very unnerving situation, with so much uncertainty ahead of us. We wish you all the best going forward, and hope everything returns to normalcy soon. We've been getting out a fair amount, and the fishing has been good. We're going to keep it brief this time. Trout have been great. Steelhead have been fun, but certainly dwindling. Nymphing has been the best, streamers have been fantastic. Swinging for steelhead also good. Warmwater bite is turning on. Dry flies are going strong. Lots of options...
March 24th
Well, things have really escalated here in Michigan. Over the past 24 hours, the government has issued a statewide lock-down, instructing people to stay at home as much as possible. As far as we can tell, you are STILL ALLOWED to go fishing. But be smart about it, don't share a boat with a buddy, and try not to stop at gas stations along the way (if you can help it). There is nothing wrong with driving to the river, and spending some time outdoors. Again, be smart about it, and take this ordeal seriously. The only way we're going...
March Madness
Based on the calendar, The Spring run is "here". But in general, we are still waiting on the big pulse of chrome fish. Most of the rivers have plenty of steelhead, but mainly just the holdovers from the fall. We are banking on the upcoming rain this week, paired with the warm weather to draw in more fish from the lake. The forecast is absurdly warm, so that will only help things along. Not to say there are no chrome fish around, there certainly are. But from what we've heard, most rivers are still lacking the big spring push everyone so...
