Oct 31st, 2019 | Fall Gone
Happy Halloween! Seems like our Fall weather is about to disappear, and we are entering a cold period for the next week or so. Nothing too bad, but certainly below average for this time of year. Last weekend, the entire state of Michigan got a nice shot of rain, upwards of 3 inches in places. The rivers are still high, but are trying to come down. Just as they start to drop, we get another little storm passing through, dumping enough rain to slow the drop. Guess it's better than low water, but it presents problems for the wading angler....
Oct 24th 2019 | Chrome Season
Steelhead are still rolling in, and King numbers are low. Within the next week they will basically be gone, but I guess there are a couple fresh Salmon still coming upstream. There are still some fish spawning, but for the most part, they are done. It was an epic season with some big dawgs. We have shifted gears to steelhead and trout. Steelhead are off to a great start, with lots of fish showing up. The Fall run will keep coming in over the next month, and by late November, most of the fall steelhead will be inland. Generally speaking,...
October 17th, 2019 | Peak Colors
Safe to say the leaves are in full Autumn colors right now, and it's pretty spectacular. Makes for a nice backdrop during a long day on the water. This last weekend was wet, windy, and sometimes bright and sunny. Got fairly cold at night, and made things sort of challenging overall. Had a great time though, and caught a few fish along the way. Trout fishing will remain strong, and steelhead numbers have increased greatly. The King run is dissipating, with maybe another push of fish yet to come. Seemed like the egg bite for trout was tough over the...
October 10th, 2019 | Prime Time
We are on the leading edge of arguably the best fishing of the year. Water temps are dropping to a lower level, and fish activity is really ramping up. Salmon run is slightly past peak, Steelhead are showing up, and the trout fishing is getting really good. We are recovering from the high water last week, and nearly all the rivers impacted are now down and approachable again. They are still on the high side, but not nearly what they were 6 days ago. The weekend weather forecast is pretty crazy, with a dip in temps, and another hit of...
April 22nd, 2019 | Trout Opener
The trout opener is this Saturday, and we couldn't be more excited. All that means, is certain regulations change for certain rivers this weekend. Some rivers open up, and keeping trout in permissible rivers becomes legal. There are many trout streams that are "open" all year, but they are catch and release only during the off season. Check your local river for tackle restrictions, slot limits, access, etc etc. One fantastic resource for the trout angler is the all new Flyfishers Guide to Michigan. It's loaded with maps, access sites, fly patterns, and a brief history of each river. Great resource for...
