Michigan Fly Fishing Report RSS

Michigan’s current dry spell has made the local fishing hit or miss.  We are still picking up smallmouth bass near structure and pike in slower moving spots.  Top flies for smallmouth have been desperate Housewives and BoogleBugs.  Chartreuse and White seem to be the top two fly colors.  With such dry weather the mosquitoes haven’t been terrible making it easier to jump in the Red Cedar and Looking Glass Rivers.  Make sure you are fishing a wire or heavy fluorocarbon on either piece of water.  Flies tied with Mini Dragon tails have been producing.  The clear water had also made...

Trout fishing has improved with the rain and cooler overnight lows. Nymphing and hopper fishing is productive for trout around the state. Rubberleg buggers, baitfish patterns, and frogs are producing well for Smallmouth.

High temperatures are creating stressful conditions for Trout. Bass fishing has been great as local rivers take shape. Streamer bite is good in the morning, top water action has been good in the evenings.

The Hex hatch is coming to a close, and water temperatures are warm across the state. Bass fishing is improving, and once we get some cooler weather, terrestrial fishing, nymphing, and mousing will be the name of the game for trout.

Hex fishing in Northern Michigan continues to be great and the forecast for the week going into the weekend looks promising. Local trout streams are fishing well with attractors and nymphs, terrestrials are just around the corner and bass fishing continues to be good.
