We are just coming off of another great king season. The salmon have completed their annual migration up most of the rivers in West Michigan and were in good numbers despite low water. There are still a few straggler fish that are just starting to spawn but will taper off in the next two weeks. A good group of steelhead have also come into most of the rivers following the salmon run. Over the holiday break the water level was still up and the water temperature was down so I took advantage and chased some trout on our local waterways. The trout seemed healthy and happy to play. Smaller streamers, nymphs, and foam bugs all worked well. The first heatwave is behind us but we are entering that part of the summer when more heat is sure to come. Trout fishing has become a morning and night deal with how hot the days are again, be on the look out for water temps becoming unsafe to fish for trout this weekend. if you do plan on going fishing mice at night is the name of the game right now. Its been another week of solid fishing reports from across the state. As day time highs have been creeping up a bit, the overnight lows have been reasonable, and we have gotten some rain here and there. This has made for happy fish and good fishing. Nymph bite has been good during the mornings and evenings for trout. Euro nymphs in standard variations have been producing well. Don't be afraid to downsize a bit when things get slow, you might just surprise yourself...Terrestrial fishing is starting to take off as well. Dry dropper is always a good option to cover...
