Over the holiday break the water level was still up and the water temperature was down so I took advantage and chased some trout on our local waterways.  The trout seemed healthy and happy to play.  Smaller streamers, nymphs, and foam bugs all worked well.

The first heatwave is behind us but we are entering that part of the summer when more heat is sure to come.  With that being said I'm sure the focus of our fly fishing will switch over to warm water species.  Personally I have not focused much on chasing smallmouth around but I did hook into a few while swinging small streamers on the lower rogue the other day.

If you chase trout throughout the summer please keep in mind the water temperatures. Once water temps reach that 67/68 degree mark its best to focus on warm water species.  If you do wish to continue fishing for trout focus on early morning or late evening/nighttime fishing when the water temps drop to an acceptable level.

For smallmouth baitfish patterns, crawfish patterns, and poppers (my favorite) will all work.

For trout ill be focusing on the foam bugs for the near future.  Hoppers, ants, damsels, etc. should all be on the menu. Moussing is also a great way to hunt for nighttime trout.

The shop is stocked up on all of the above mentioned flies as well as rods, reels, and lines. If you need a restock of anything stop in and we can help you out.

We are still offering our free fly fishing 101 classes through July and August with a few fly fishing 201 classes ($50) scheduled in there as well. Check out our class schedule and RSVP HERE

The summer is going fast so get out on the water and enjoy yourself.  If there is anything we can assist you with please stop in the shop and we will be more that happy to help you out.
