Summer nights are officially here and trout fishing has been steadily improving. Bugs are in the air and trout are rising in the evening with regularity, finally. Don't forget your headlamps like I did this weekend, you are going to want them as we start fishing later and later into the evenings. Caddis, Sulphurs, and Gray Drakes and Brown Drakes are on the menu depending on where you are headed. This weeks warm temperatures should really blow the lid off of things and bring some nights of heavy bugs. If you are on your way to the Upper Manistee River,...
Abrupt Change
The drought we experienced earlier this month has come to a definitive end, and we’re now facing some very different fishing conditions. It took a lot of rain to fill the low water table and we recovered two months worth of precipitation in about two and a half days. If the forecast for most of the Lower Peninsula is correct, we expect to see high and dirty water for a week or more. Look for quick-draining tributaries and creeks which should have better clarity. Anglers have had success streamer fishing and this may be the name of the game...
Brown Bugs & Drought
June is a month many of us cherish. We plan our lives around the behavior of winged insects and risk going a little crazy with changes in our sleep schedules. Swarms of mosquitos, waders caked with black silt, and even the occasional midge lodged underneath an eyelid…all of that discomfort seems to fade when trout start to rise. Last week our northern rivers saw an emergence of brown drakes. Sulfurs were also seen in strong numbers but fish didn’t seem to be as interested in them. Hex have also been found and their migration up and down our...
Memorial Day Weekend
On Memorial Day we honor the fallen members of our military and reflect on the freedom we enjoy because of their sacrifice. As plans are being made for this weekend, I can't help but remember a day when I was nine years old. I'd been listening in on a heated discussion about the decision to go to war with Iraq. We were eating lunch. A World War II veteran named Roger Kloote stood up. Making no reference to his political affiliation or position on the subject Roger simply stated, "You don't know what war is like. You couldn't possibly know...
Spring Awakening
As with most things here in the midwest, life seems to be dictated to some degree by the change of season and uncertain weather patterns. For us anglers, these transitions are sometimes easier to anticipate than they are to actually prepare for. We spend the winter months restocking fly boxes, overhauling organizational systems, and tinkering with equipment that might just be better off left alone. With trout season officially open, it's no wonder that we've had quite a few customers stopping in to pick up that "one" last minute thing before heading out to fish. The fluctuation in temperature and...
