Hex Camp
And just like that hex camp was over. Many people look forward to November 15th each year for a pilgrimage up-north for deer camp. We, on the other hand, have looked forward to the end of June and have begun to create memories that will be passed down to grandkids someday. Good food, friends, fires, and fish is the perfect mix for your soul during these uncertain times. Politics are checked at the door for the most part and trying to piece together the puzzle pieces of the hex hatch is the main objective. This year we had success...
The Big Dance | Hex Hatch
The hex hatch is a unique experience in Northern Michigan that can drive someone crazy. Some individuals plan vacations around some people skip sleep and drive north after work and return home before sun rise. It is not until you "hit it" that an individual gets what all the hype is about. Many rivers got the first taste of bugs over the past few nights and should continue for the next 10 days. My experience started after a family game of Pictionary that ended around 10pm with a "I'm going to see if there are any bugs" statement. Shortly after I...
Father's Day Fishing Report
One of my favorite times of year in Michigan. Unlimited opportunities across the state chasing trout on dry flies. All leading up to the big dance with the hex hatch on the horizon. Brown drakes and grey drakes were the main bugs on northern rivers across the state and the cold temps played games with the constancy. Iso's fished blindly have produced numbers of fish leading our to the hatch while the streamer bite so so. This weeks temperatures look more forgiving and any night could be the night. Good luck to all venturing into the night! SHOP BUGSLocal fishing...
Quarantine Life
First off, we hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this chaotic time. It's a very unnerving situation, with so much uncertainty ahead of us. We wish you all the best going forward, and hope everything returns to normalcy soon. We've been getting out a fair amount, and the fishing has been good. We're going to keep it brief this time. Trout have been great. Steelhead have been fun, but certainly dwindling. Nymphing has been the best, streamers have been fantastic. Swinging for steelhead also good. Warmwater bite is turning on. Dry flies are going strong. Lots of options...
March 24th
Well, things have really escalated here in Michigan. Over the past 24 hours, the government has issued a statewide lock-down, instructing people to stay at home as much as possible. As far as we can tell, you are STILL ALLOWED to go fishing. But be smart about it, don't share a boat with a buddy, and try not to stop at gas stations along the way (if you can help it). There is nothing wrong with driving to the river, and spending some time outdoors. Again, be smart about it, and take this ordeal seriously. The only way we're going...
