As the salmon eggs mature and turn into Alevin, the next phase in the salmon life cycle is the "Fry" stage. It starts to look a bit more like a minnow as the yolk sac is absorbed. The head is more defined, the parr marks start to appear, and they become a little stronger. They are better at swimming in this stage, so a swung presentation is a good way to fish this pattern.  This is a very easy fly to tie, with just a handful of materials needed. This pattern has been flying under the radar, (intentionally), for a couple years now. It is absolutely lethal on Trout and Steelhead here in Michigan. It's pretty easy to tie, and once you get the hang of it, you can fill a couple rows in your box quickly. During the Spring, caddis larva are a big food source for trout and steelhead. They become dislodged from the gravel when steelhead start fanning the rocks to make their beds. Next time you're on the river, tie this on, and drift it through the pool below any active gravel. Pretty solid fly choice. They are super easy to tie, and the clear vinyl rib adds durability, and a nice segmentation that looks better than plain wire. Get with the program and tie some up.
