Fishing Report from a couple recent guide trips on local Grand Rapids waters. Steelhead fishing is really starting to pick up, with stable weather, temps, and water levels up a bit, steelhead have been happy. This time of year can be very hard to find fish but once you do usually they’ll eat, just have to get the right pattern in front of their face. Get out and take advantage of the mild winter we are having, there are plenty of fish around! We have been having success running smaller stones and rag eggs lately. Stones in 10s and 12s,...

Steelhead / Brown Trout Fishing Report Steelhead around Grand Rapids has been a little slower due to water levels being very low in almost all of our rivers. We have found a few fish around Grand Rapids in the tribs, for the most part it's been an all nymph bite. Size 8-12 nymphs have been getting the only bites of the day, the flies we have been using in my boat are (Hex nymphs, Krilla, and Stoneflies). Yesterday we had fish take on size 10 Stones. As you travel further north the fishing has been a little better, with the...

Well where did all the snow go? In true Michigan style it went from 2 feet of snow to 40 and raining, which isn't the worst thing in the world due to the low water levels across the state. I was up north all weekend poking around steelhead rivers swinging and indy fishing with no great luck, it was tough all weekend with the blue bird skies paired with 50 degree temps, it wasn't the best idea I have ever had. I will say the fish are there, with good bumps happening every so often along with 2 steelhead just unhooking...

It's that time of the year again, the Salmon are back and are in full swing of things. Rivers across the state are filled with Kings and Cohos on their yearly trip to spawn. For rivers local to Grand Rapids ( Rogue, and the Grand) we have found a perfect drift with an indicator set up has been the ticket to landing kings, Cohos, and browns! With the perfect drift its almost impossible for those fish to say no to an egg or nymph pattern! Hot Flies that we have found right now for this set up are- Orange...

Summer nights are officially here and trout fishing has been steadily improving. Bugs are in the air and trout are rising in the evening with regularity, finally. Don't forget your headlamps like I did this weekend, you are going to want them as we start fishing later and later into the evenings. Caddis, Sulphurs, and Gray Drakes and Brown Drakes are on the menu depending on where you are headed. This weeks warm temperatures should really blow the lid off of things and bring some nights of heavy bugs. If you are on your way to the Upper Manistee River,...
