As with most things here in the midwest, life seems to be dictated to some degree by the change of season and uncertain weather patterns. For us anglers, these transitions are sometimes easier to anticipate than they are to actually prepare for. We spend the winter months restocking fly boxes, overhauling organizational systems, and tinkering with equipment that might just be better off left alone. March Madness

March Madness

March is typically a month filled with madness at the shop with piles of new product coming in daily, multiple trade shows and the rivers on the verge of blowing out with snow melt and a freak rain storm.  After a complete year of madness, this March has started out with some consistency and is bringing high hopes for a great 2021.  The rivers across the state are in good shape with steelhead numbers increasing daily in most systems. With the slowly increasing water temps, barring an extreme water event, steelheading should remain steady well into April. Steelhead Season

Steelhead Season

Fishing has been pretty good over the last couple weeks. We are officially in the throws of steelhead season. Temps are dropping, although they are dropping slowly and that is drawing out fall a bit which we are happy about.  Steelhead are around in most every river system at this point, and we are setting up for a good winter of fishing. Fall Rain

Fall Rain
As I write this report the fall rain we have been hoping for is finally falling. Its been a cloudy week, hinting at rain each day, but last night the sky finally broke open and brought the shot of rain we needed. Fishing was pretty good this weekend, but low water conditions made things a little tough. Smaller more natural patterns, and persistence were the keys to success.

Full Swing Fall

Full Swing Fall
There is no question it is fall in Michigan. After a long hot summer the weather has finally cooled off, the leaves are changing, mornings are crisp, and there is even some rain in the forecast! This is among the best times of the year to get outside and enjoy some time on the water. Opportunities abound. Trout fishing has been great, Kings and Cohos are still around, and Steelhead are on the horizon.
